Thiepval Memorial

Born Torphichen 1889, the son of James Campbell, a papermill worker and his wife Helen Lumsden Grieve. Worked at Westfield paper mill. Enlisted at Leith. Was carrying bombs up to an attacking line when he was hit by machine gun fire.

The newspaper obituary, (West Lothian Courier), states:

Above is a picture of Private Robert Campbell, of the Gordon Highlanders, whose parents have now received confirmation of the tidings of his being killed in action on 18th july last year. At the time, Private Campbell was carrying bombs up to an attacking line when he was mortally wounded by the enemy's machine gun fire. His Company Commander, in writing to his parents at the time, remarked that he had fought as a Gordon should. Of a quiet retiring disposition, Private Campbell was much liked by his friends in Torphichen and is greatly missed by his parents. He was in his 28th year, and before enlisting was employed in Westfield Paper Mill.
