Said to have been born Linlithgow, resident in Edinburgh. The son of Patrick McIvor, a plasterer and his wife Annie, 4 Jamaica Street, Edinburgh who lived in the village during the war. James had been a regular soldier in India for three years but volunteered soon after the declaration of war.
The Newspaper Obituary states:
Pte. James M'Iver, whose portrait we publish, is a son of Mr. Patrick M'Iver, Torphichen. As we announced in our issue of last week, Pte. M'Iver, 11th R.S., was killed in action in France on 26th September. He served as a soldier three years in India, but when war broke out in 1914, although he was free from the Army, he at once offered his services, and has been in France and Belgium since September 1914.
